Dear Readers,

Welcome to our May edition.

What can I tell you that I have not said before? I could write about the weather, about how it annoys me (hot one day cold the next). Or I could write about plane crashes and how sad it makes me to read about all those souls lost. Or maybe you would like to read about something ground breaking in the aviation field. There is so much to say and yet somehow nothing comes to mind. I am pretty sure you are not interested in the last movie I saw or the latest CD I bought. But while compiling this edition and conversing with my colleagues about what we could include we discovered that nothing much has happened this month. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that May decided to take it easy and let June handle the rest.

Georg Stöcker goes down memory lane in our main article and discovers that there were a whole lot of institutes involved in aviation research back in the day.

Also included are a couple of short topics .

In the not so distant future there are our courses, of course. Please have a look at the open course status and our course updates.

This month we have no job offers but you can of course continue to send us your job offers.

Have a warm June and try not to get sunburned!

Yearbook 1937 of the German Aviation Research

Sitting in the HomeOffice. Once again it is time for a Newsletter article. My brain is working like a professional athlete to bring some words to paper. Emptiness!

I glance around the room. My eyes wander over the book shelf. Novels, old textbooks (maths, biology, chemistry, physics, history, geometry, …), books about space, astronomy, books about aviation.

Aviation. Yes, that is our metier, that is our field.

“Yearbook 1937 of the German Aviation Research”. What is that about? This is a compilation of the most important essays in the field of Aviation Research of the year 1937 from Germany. Published by the “Centre of research reporting of aviation research, Berlin-Adlerhof”.

It is quite impressive what a large number of institutes were involved in the field of aviation research during that time in Germany.

  • German Academy of Aviation Research
  • Lilienthal-Society for Aviation Research
  • Centre of Research Reporting of Aviation Research
  • Scientific-Technical Research Institutions of the Aviation Ministry:
    • German Research Institute for Aviation E.V. (DVL), Berlin-Adlerhof
    • German Research Institute for Aviation E.V. (DFL), Braunschweig
    • Aerodynamics Research Institute Göttingen E.V. (AVA)
    • German Research Institute for Glider Flight E.V., Darmstadt (DFS)
    • Flight Radio-Research Institute Oberpfaffenhofen E.V. (FFO), Oberpfaffenhofen (Oberbayern)
  • Other Aviation Research Institutes:
    • Aerodynamics Institute of the Technical University Aachen
    • Flight Technology Institute, Technical University Berlin
    • Institute for Aviation Measuring Technology and Flight Meteorology, Technical University Braunschweig
    • Aerodynamics Institute of the Technical University Darmstadt
    • Institute for Aeromechanics and Flight Technology, Technical University Hannover
    • Wireless Telegraphic and Air Electrical Research Institute, Gräfelfing near Munich
    • Flight Technology Institute at the Technical University Stuttgart
    • Research Institute for Motor Vehicle Traits and Vehicle Engines at the Technical University Stuttgart

Additionally, there were also „Flight Technical Field Expert Groups and Working Pools at Universitys and higher technical colleges”.

This “Yearbook 1937”, which I have in front of me, is a compilation of concentrated knowledge in the field of aviation of that time. It contains articles on “Airframe”, “Power Units” and “Equipment”.

In the area of “Airframe” articles on “Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics” can be found. For example, an essay is about “Aero dynamical forces on wings and elevator units at certain elevator deflections in horizontal flight”. Another essay in the area of “material research of the airframe” is about “Concerning the topic of welding sensitivity of aircraft construction steel”.

Similar essays can be found in the other areas “Power Units” and “Equipment”.

For example, an essay was published in “Equipment”, subchapter “Medizin”, titled: “Up to which intensity can a human tolerate  centrifugal force in an aircraft and which influence does a change of posture have”.

While reading such articles sooner or later one will encounter again and again statements concerning the usage for military purposes. That is how it was, how it is and how it will be. The search for a possible military usage is an important factor in research and of course in financing the research projects.

Nevertheless, when I leaf through these old books it becomes clear to me that without these fundamental researches what we apply today would not be possible. And it is enormous what has been achieved in this relatively short time since the modern aviation came to be, meaning since the Brothers Wright.

I will try, in some of the following newsletters, to delve deeper into some of these research projects. It is important to remind ourselves which knowledge has been gathered during that time which is completely self-evident nowadays that we do not even think about it anymore.
